Jarda’s Stars
Child psychiatrist Hazel Paul struggles to reconcile her mother’s unusual double life after her sudden passing.
Deven and Vibhor came together to write this spec script, which succeeds in telling the story of an immigrant, of an Americanized family, and of a soon-to-be-mother who is unsure that the world has any good left in it for her unborn child.
Both Deven and Vibhor are second-generation Indian immigrants who have grown accustomed to the art of navigating between simultaneously conflicting cultures and identities.
Approaching this script, we set out to capture a generational and intersectional portrayal of the first-generation immigrant experience in ways that are ultimately relatable to American families broadly—a universal take-home story that challenges our approach, and perception, of what we so often take for granted: our relationship to the parents who raised us and the ability to grapple with their lived experiences that inherently shape our lives.
Our work tends to capture voices and perspectives that are not traditionally heard in cinema, while simultaneously integrating them in a seamless way, allowing these characters to emerge as three-dimensional characters in all their glory and flaws; the intersections of race, sexual orientation, and culture have helped shape these characters, but are never the sole driving force behind their characterizations.
